Heard this on 104.3 the other day and have had it on repeat since.
Neil Young – Old Man
Need to shake things up at work?
Interesting article from the Harvard Business Review blog about what to do when you’ve become complacent at your job.
“We’re all more comfortable challenging someone else’s thinking than stepping back and critically assessing our own ideas and behaviors”

Print is going the way of cassette tapes and VHS. As much as I want to trust that people still love the tangible nature of holding print in their hands, I’m also aware that the next generations may not be so keen on the idea. Innovations such as the Kindle and Esquire’s electronic paper, in combination with our growing adaptation to interactivity and handheld devices are forging the way for the distancing of print as we know it.
Starting in 1804, Bonnier is a multi-channel media company with their fingers in many different pies, such as, books, broadcasting, press entertainment and magazines. A cursory glance at their site tells me a major focus of theirs is print, seemingly producing a magazine for every industry imaginable. In the span of 205 years, I think you would learn what works and what doesn’t, moreover, how to stay relevant. Instead of winding up like the music industry, which sat on their hands while the digital revolution occurred, Bonier is working with their partner, Berg, to create a prototype electronic reader that will undoubtedly change the industry.
What’s great about this concept is that they’re not trying to digitally mimic our current interactions with print. There is more of a focus on the content in relation to how we’re already used to reading digitally. As in vertically through email and blogs and horizontally such as web page browsing. Also, the UI is inherently hidden and only activated with certain gestures so that it doesn’t take away from the content. Watch for more of this around 6:30.
It will be interesting to see how this concept gestates, but being produced by a major media company infers that there might not be as much of a challenge in getting the industry to accept it.
Flow Chart Concepts

Working around software engineers and programmers all day, I’m occasionally asked, “hey, can you take this flow chart and pretty it up?”
I don’t know what that means, pretty it up.
But I can’t be the only one that goes through this, so I thought I’d share some concepts I create.
Cross Country Poster
After a little over 12 years of living in LA, my sister decided to move back east. When the moving plans were finalized, it was decided that my dad was going to fly out there, help her pack, then they were going to drive across the country, back home.
Pretty rad if you ask me.
I made a poster for their journey … 18″x24″

Rory Sutherland @ Ted
Rory Sutherland is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy Group UK, one of the worlds largest advertising firms. His talk at Ted is both information and hysterical and surmises that advertising can add value to a product by changing our perception. Whether you’re in advertising or not, I think it’s work the 18 minutes.
If Ted’s video player doesn’t work, check out Part I and Part II on youtube.
David Lynch’s Interview Project
I kept track of the Interview Project as the interviews were first being posted, then for whatever reason, I just fell off. Which isn’t such a bad thing, I think the experiences within that time have lead me to look at these in a different light.
Some interviews are sad, others are enlightening and some are inspiring. Whichever emotion you feel, I think each interview provides a sense of perspective … a sense of mortality. Especially when they ask an 80 year old man what his plans are for the future, to which he responds, “I can’t make any plans …”.
Emblaze “First Else”

“But how will it stack up against the iPhone?”
I’m pretty much sick of that question. We all know the iPhone is a revolutionary piece of tech and we all know it will be challenged from time to time. However, it just doesn’t seem that anyone has come close to being as revolutionary as the iPhone has been … they all take some piece of the iPhone’s UI, tweak it, add some stuff then wrap it in a fancy ad campaign. But the fact is, besides multitasking, no one has changed the game like the iPhone.
However, I just saw this video of the new Emblaze “First Else” smart phone, and I’m thinking that this might be the most promising game changer the interactive mobile industry has seen in a while. The graphics on this interface look amazing and the interaction looks even better. We’ll see how the phone does when the specs and design are finalized. My only question is, what if you’re a lefty?

2010 FIFA World Cup Draw

There we have it, the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. I have mixed emotions about being in a group with England. With our win over Spain in the Confederations Cup, I’d like to have some optimism, but Capello has cut the fat from the England squad’s way of life, so it will be verrryy interesting. We should both advance, but after that, who the hell knows at this point.
